Fun Facts About Eagles
The iconic Bald Eagle is an avid fisher, and also feeds on carrion foraged from the water. Golden Eagles, however, eat mostly small mammals, rather than fish. In Mongolia, the Kazakh people have an incredible traditional practice of hunting with trained Golden Eagles while riding on horseback. It’s a treasured ancient tradition that UNESCO added to the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011.
You’re probably most familiar with the Bald Eagle as a symbol of the United States. But founding father Benjamin Franklin had a very different preference for the national bird: he urged his compatriots to choose the Wild Turkey for that honor. Franklin didn’t like the scavenging and fish-stealing tendencies of the Bald Eagle, and thought that it made the bird too shifty to represent the nation!
The Golden Eagle actually represents more countries in the world than any other animal–the Bald Eagle doesn’t get all the honors!
The Bald Eagle is the largest bird of prey in the United States. While there are condors and vultures that are larger, they are exclusively scavengers and do not hunt, so they do not qualify as birds of prey.
An eagle in the wild will only live into its 30s, but eagles in captivity have lived as long as 70 years! This is thanks to veterinary care, abundant food, and a safe habitat.
Eagles are very fast–they can fly about 100 miles per hour. But they’ve got nothing on the world’s fastest bird, the Peregrine Falcon, that can fly at about 242 miles per hour!
