You may not have a monkey at home, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a favorite stuffed animal that needs a suitable monkey moniker. Or maybe you have an Affenpinscher, the dog breed whose name translates to monkey terrier in German because of their distinctive simian-like face. Whatever your reasons, you’re sure to find the perfect names for a whole barrel of monkeys in the names lists below.

Monkeys vs Apes

People often think monkeys and apes are the same. Although both are primates, they’re two very different animals. One of the easiest ways to tell them apart is to check for a tail. Apes don’t have them, while almost all of the more than 260 species of monkeys do. Monkeys tend to be smaller than apes are and include baboons, macaques, and capuchins. Chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, and humans are among the ape species. They even look like a hairier version of us, and their opposable thumbs allow them to swing through the trees, use tools, and peel bananas.

Can You Get A Pet Monkey?

A monkey is not your average pet. As with any exotic creature, it’s very important to do your homework because it’s not legal to own monkeys in many places, and for good reasons. They can live anywhere from 20 to 40 years and need a complete commitment throughout their entire life. While some may be gentle, others can become unpredictable and aggressive with a tendency to bite. Like humans, they’re very social creatures who love being around other monkeys. Separation from their family can have a devastating impact on their well-being.

Female Monkey Names

As with most dog breeds, girl monkeys are generally smaller than males. They’re also less aggressive, the main caregivers of their young, and help unite the group through congenial grooming.
