Fun Dolphin Facts

Dolphins are not only adorable but are also regarded as one of the world’s smartest animals. Once you’ve decided on a dolphin name, it’s time to regale your friends and family with some remarkable dolphin data.

There are around 40 different species of dolphin. The smallest and rarest is called Hector’s Dolphin. They measure from three to four feet long, have black facial markings, and a dorsal fin that looks like one of Mickey Mouse’s ears. Killer whales are the largest member of the dolphin family, reaching lengths of up to 30 feet.

Dolphins use complex ways to communicate. They make a variety of sounds, including whistles, squeaks, squawks, moans, and barks to talk to each other, and very likely, with other species too. They also produce high-frequency clicks as a kind of sonar system called echolocation. When these clicks hit an object in the water, they bounce off and return to the dolphin as echoes, allowing them to sense their surroundings.

Dolphins are very athletic. They dive up to 1,000 feet underwater, can leap up to 20 feet in the air, and enjoy surfing the waves, just as humans do. Despite living in the water, dolphins are mammals. They have lungs and breathe like people and will usually resurface three to five times per minute to get oxygen. However, dolphins can hold their breath for up to 15 minutes.

The dolphin’s intelligence has demonstrated that they are capable of problem-solving, using tools, self-awareness, innovation, teaching, mimicry, playfulness, joy, grief, and empathy. Dolphins are caring creatures that tend to the old, stick, and injured amongst them.
