Best Female Goat Names
Here are our favorite names for female goats – enough to name a whole herd of them!
But our ideas don’t end there – here are over 150 more suggestions to consider!
Old Fashioned Female Goat Names
Perhaps it’s because a female goat is called a nanny goat, but all of them suit old fashioned names. So to fit in with that theme, here are some of the most popular names from the 1920s, according to the Social Security Administration.
Of course, there’s ‘old’ and there’s ‘really old’. And that’s where our next category of females comes in.
Ancient Female Goat Names
Why have we chosen ancient names as a category?!
Well, goats were one of the first ever animal species to be domesticated. The first domestic goats were kept in the Middle East, around 10,000 years ago. And these human names are all thousands of years old too, so they make a fitting tribute to the millenia-long relationship between goats and humans.
Next up, we have some goat names with real gravitas.
Regal Female Goat Names
Wild goat herds choose a single dominant female to act as the ‘flock queen’. She’s picked mostly based on her age, but also partly on whether or not she has horns. The queen leads the herd to the best grazing areas, and decides where they will stop to eat. She teaches the younger goats which plants are inedible or poisonous, and she gets the best sleeping spot at the end of the day.
Captive coats – whether they are kept as pets or commercial dairy herds – are less likely to have a flock queen. But you might still have one special female living with you who’s bolder, more assertive and more regal than the rest. Maybe she just has the poise of a queen, and you want to celebrate it. If so, here are some names of human queens throughout the ages, to inspire you:

Unusual Female Goat Names
One of the most fun things about naming animals is that you can be a bit less restrained than you’re likely to be when naming a human. Goats will never be asked to spell an unusual name, for example, or suffer years of seeing it misspelt on the side of a coffee cup.
So here are some unusual goat names, to celebrate your goat’s individuality, and make them even more unforgettable:
If nothing has caught your eye yet, don’t worry. We still have one more category of excellent female goat names for you to consider.
Cute Female Goat Names
There are somewhere in the region of 300 distinct goat breeds, but the breed most likely to be kept as a pet is the pygmy goat. This is partly practical – pygmy goats need less space, and less food. But generations of breeding for a nice temperament means that pygmies are also the most likely breed to be docile and affectionate.
Pygmy goats all have the same form of hereditary dwarfism which means that they only grow 16 to 20 inches tall. So these cute female goat names are a sweet nod to their scaled down size:
Of course, you could use them for larger goat breeds too!
Choosing Female Goat Names
That was the last of our name lists. Did you see anything you like for your female goat?
It’s pretty easy to teach a goat to respond to their name when you’ve chosen one. Just take them a special treat such as grapes, carrots, celery, pear or squash, and repeat their name several times as you feed it to them. Do this frequently, and they’ll soon be looking up and rushing towards you at the sound of their name. Of course, they won’t necessarily understand that their name refers to them and not the treats, but the outcome is still what you want!
