Fun Facts About Polar Bears

See how many you knew!

1. Polars bears aren’t really white

When we think about polar bears, the first thing that springs to mind is their lush, white fur. But the funny thing about it is that it’s not white at all: it’s actually clear!

The light that is scattered as it comes through the clear fur makes it appear white, and provides the polar bear with camouflage for hunting. Its skin is actually black, to help it absorb as much heat as possible. This characteristic also makes their tongues appear blue.

2. Polar bears can swim for days

You may know that polar bears hunt in the water, but did you know just how incredible they are at swimming? They can swim for days at a time!

Polar bears also swim at speeds of about 6 miles per hour, which is comparable to Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps. Us mere mortals can only swim about 2 miles per hour.

3. They have an incredible sense of smell

Polar bears have an astonishingly strong sense of smell. How strong? They can find a seal swimming in the water under three feet of solid snow, just by the scent!

4. Polar bears are the biggest meat eater on land

Polar bears are the world’s largest land-based carnivores. You might think that means they’re big when they’re born too, but surprisingly, newborn polar bears are the same size as a guinea pig.

5. Polar bears don’t hibernate

Unlike many other species of bears, polar bears don’t hibernate. Sometimes they will dig in to sleep out a snowstorm, though. They spend the majority of their time roaming extremely long distances to hunt their favorite food: seals.
